European efforts in digital sovereignty have grown over the last decade in response to a variety of factors, with security and infrastructure emerging as notable motivations.
In terms of security, laws such as the USA’s FISA and Cloud Act and China’s Cyber Security Law raise concerns about EU residents' data safety when hyperscalers such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft continue to dominate the market.
Despite this challenging landscape, MVHcloud, Hetzner, and many other VPS providers in Europe have built strong offerings. Newer players, like Sweden’s Evroc, aspire to hypescaler ambition and have investments to match.
Closer to home, Internetstiftelsen and Försäkringskassan are pioneers in this field.
Physical hardware, virtual machines, container orchestration, and their tooling are key to enabling organizations to build out their own infrastructure. It’s not an easy field. There is high complexity and many pitfalls.
For this meetup, it’s our pleasure to invite two wonderful practitioners of the craft from Internetstiftelsen and Scandinavian Airlines to share with us their deep experience in this field.
Jonathan Eliasson, Head of Server Systems, Internetstiftelsen
As Head of Server System, Jonathan is Tech Lead for several projects to maintain and improve The Swedish Internet Foundation’s services, i.e. the top level domains .SE and .NU. He also achieves security through automation together with his team.
In this meetup, Jonathan will discuss challenges and possibilities of a hybrid cloud and on-premise environment.
Praveen Jelish, Tech Lead, Scandinavian Airlines
As Tech Lead, Praveen is responsible for leading teams to architect and implement secure software for SAS. With his team, he has ensured the smooth running of CI/CD pipelines and hosting services. Years of hard-won experience has given him excellent perspective and insight into the good and bad of both maintaining your own container orchestration as well as using managed services.
In this meetup, Praveen will discuss differences in the costs of development between owning your own Kubernetes setup and using Azure’s App Service.
