The pursuit of burnout for IT professionals - a guide to disbalance

16 Jan 2025, 12:00–13:00 | Organizer: Peter Supan

Life in the IT sector can be quite hectic. The constantly changing technology landscape, fast-paced environment, project deadlines and long hours make it difficult to achieve a healthy work-life balance. Sounds familiar? In this workshop, our organizer Peter shares a cautionary tale for IT professionals and takes you through research-backed tools to maximize your chances of running empty - but also the opposite!

The Mjärdevi area in Linköping is a home to the best in the industry, perhaps the country's most skilled IT talents. Here, many of us work on something we consider important, and we take it seriously. We give our best—and sometimes even more — because we know there’s always room for improvement. But this is a delicate balance. Giving too much now can mean not being able to give our best later. In the best-case scenario, we have to scale back at an inconvenient time. More often, however, we cut back on the very things that refuel us, leading to a downward spiral where we wonder how we were ever so energetic before. This inspirational talk is for all of us who want to give their best without depleting their reserves — at the office, with family, among friends, and in hobbies.

I’ve always loved the book The Pursuit of Unhappiness and aim to take a similar approach to the topic of burnout — or rather, how to achieve sustainable energy in daily life. Here’s what you can expect from this session:

  • A research-backed guide to maximizing your chances of running on empty.
  • Tools and practical advice to successfully accomplish burnout.
  • Insights into the mechanisms behind sabotaging your own recovery.
  • Tips for maintaining the appearance of someone who cares for themselves while steadily depleting your reserves.

This event is for you if you are working or seeking work in the IT industry, if you are running your own business, or just are someone who wants to be aware of the consequences of a work-induced burn-out!

About me

I am a personal trainer and former software developer who changed careers to focus on using physical training as a tool for both high performance and active recovery — whether at the office or beyond. I’m also a solo entrepreneur, making all the mistakes that come with the territory.

My attitude toward training has saved me from the worst, and it has given me unique insights into both the well-trodden highways to burnout and the less-traveled trails toward sustainable energy and balance.
